Digital Artist, Samson Colborn creates digital portraits based on ordinary snapshots provided to him by his clients. With the popularity of consumer-level digital photography, people are taking more pictures than ever. However, there is a disparity between the amount of pictures taken and the amount of pictures actually printed. In addition to shoeboxes full of old photos, there are also hard drives full of digital photos that may never see the light of day. Colborn takes these photos and evaluates them for suitability of becoming a portrait worthy of being a family heirloom. For an additional fee, a customer can also schedule a photo-shoot if an acceptable snapshot is not available.

Once a photo or series of photos are chosen, he scans them into the computer to use as a basis for the portrait. Using a variety of methods and digital paint programs, Samson Colborn will produce a digital painting that, when printed on watercolor paper or canvas, will have the look of a traditional painting.

Colborn does all the work himself, including the printing onto watercolor paper or canvas. As owner of PrintingArtwork.com, he has access to a large-format  professional  printing system capable of printing museum-quality Giclée prints.

Colborn’s background is in digital photo-manipulation. “There’s a lot of digital magic that can be done with photos these days,” he says. He invites anyone to make any special requests, as he specializes in the impossible. Because his images show very little or no traces of being retouched, his work tends to often go unnoticed. “That’s okay,” he says, “Not being able to see my handiwork is the best compliment I can receive.”

The Process

Everything starts from a photograph. A client can schedule a half-hour photo session or can simply send in their own photos. Most people have a favorite photo that they would love to see turned into a work of art.

Once we receive the photos, we will evaluate them for suitability. It may be that a combination of photos will make for the perfect work of art. Once the photos are chosen, they are scanned in (if digital files were not submitted). From there, Samson works his magic. Since every creation is unique, we cannot really know what the final artwork will look like until it’s completed. The anticipation is part of the thrill.

When the artwork is near complete, we will send the client a link to see an online proof. If the client wishes, we can also send them a proof print at an addtional cost. The client can reject it in whole and not have to pay anything, suggest changes, or approve it all together. At this point the client can place an order for prints and pay for the commision of artwork. No artwork will be completed or printed without final payment. See the fee schedule below for prices. Also, the print prices are based on standard sizes. Please call for prices on custom sizes.

Creative
This price starts at $30.00. Since Samson can work very efficiently, most arworks are at this price. However, there can be additional costs based on complexity of the artwork and client requests. Client will receive an estimate and must approve the cost prior to beginning any work. The client does not have to pay anything if artwork is rejected and no prints are ordered.

Prints On Textured Fine Art Paper
In our opinion, most digital artwork looks best when printed on textured fine art paper. But it’s up to the client to decide. The costs for printing are:

8.5 x 11 proof on heavyweight matte paper: $7.00

8 x 10: $34.00; Additional prints from same order: $17.00 ea.

11 x 14: $57.00; Additional prints from same order: $29.00 ea.

16 x 20: $106.00; Additional prints from same order: $54.00 ea.

Prints On Canvas
Although we feel that fine art paper is better, there are many who disagree. So we also offer printing on canvas. All of our canvas prints are gallery-wrapped and ready for hanging. The costs for printing are:

8.5 x 11 proof on heavyweight matte paper: $7.00

8 x 10: $70.00 ea.

11 x 14: $89.00 ea.

16 x 20: $128.00 ea.
